So why Hat Mae Rampheung? Well, it depends what you are looking for in Thailand. If you love the vibrancy of Bangkok or the wild night life of Pattaya then maybe this area isn’t for you. However if you like those only in small doses then maybe it is, as travel to Pattaya is only an hour away or currently about 2.5 hours to Bangkok.
Hat Mae Rampheung is about 20 minutes away from Rayong City and its large stores and facilities, it can be popular with Thai locals on weekends, however for the most part it is very quiet and laid back. For the most part you can cross the beach road without even looking left and right and still be unlikely to encounter any traffic. The beach is uncrowded and very pleasant for an evening stroll.
Like most Thai beaches the beach can collect some junk when the tide is wrong but for the most part is tidy enough. Looking for nightlife, then be prepared to travel, as it basically consists of a few beach-side restaurants. There are a few mini-marts in town but there is also a Big C and Lotus supermarket just 10 minutes away in Ban Phe. Likewise Ban Phe also has a few night clubs that mainly cater to locals.
Hat Mae Rampheung is in fact similar in many ways to Phuket 30 years ago prior to it being “discovered”, however a lot easier to get to from Bangkok. A new motorway is being built to Pattaya and a high speed rail to Bangkok, so in the future access to these large centers will be even easier and faster. Additionally the U Tapao airport near Pattaya has also been upgraded to international flights making overseas access easier and quicker.
Currently we see many Swedish people, older people and families, enjoying the area, many like to walk at morning and dusk with what looks like skiing sticks, and most look quite healthy. Seafood is fresh, in abundance and very reasonably priced. The beaches have chairs and umbrellas or you can choose to sit on the sand, and of course there are locals more than happy to sell you all kinds of food or a beach massage as you lay back and relax.
Some people even do a bit of surfing on long boards when the swell is right, but most just prefer to just swim. Also there are no jet skis to terrorize swimmers. So if you like the quiet life then Hat Mae Rampheung could be the perfect place for holidays or retirement, in fact there are already a few westerners living here, many I understand from Pattaya where it just became too hectic for them.
